Journalist Nikhil Chakravartty while refusing the Padma Bhushan said "Their legitimacy has hit rock bottom, so much so that some of those who get it are embarrassed while others flaunt it shamelessly. Let society honour its heroes." And it is indeed the society which has deserves to bestow any honor.
The Bharat Ratna has over the years become an integral politicking tool, ever since it was started in 1950 to honour achievers in various fields. And more recently BJP has made sure that the award dances to the tunes of such political considerations. It’s not that it has not happened before. But not this game is blatantly open and discrete! But for the politicians who make mockery of everything, it’s not a surprise that they have continued to make a mockery of an honour like Bharat Ratna. And till politicians decide the honors, it is not possible to keep it above politics. Such a prestigious honor lies at the hands of few who are trying to scale down the ‘greatness’ of the title to suit their partisan interests. These politicians are systematically lowering the scales for their own interests.
But there are others who said a BIG NO! But may be not anymore.
